Delavan Lake 7/27/09 - 8/2/09

With the cooler weather, fishing has been a bit up and down. This time of year, the pike should be deep and the bass schooled up. At this point, neither of those have happened. The only constant are the big bluegills in the deeper water.

Bluegills are off the weedline in 16-18 ft of water. They can be caught anchored and fishing straight beneath the boat or with slip bobbers. Small Bait-Rig Cobra’s fished with a small split shot is producing a lot of action. I’m using a pink and white or chartreuse color. The fish are by Assembly Park Point or the Delavan Lake Marina. There are quite a few smaller fish mixed in so you need to sort to catch a good limit.

Crappies remain slow. The only good action is within the weeds in 10-12 ft of water. Small plastics in purple or chartreuse are working well. Fish them on a 1/32 oz Arkie Jig, I put a small split shot 1 ft above the jig to enable me to cast further and fish a bit faster. The best location is by Browns Channel or by the Yacht Club. With the warmer summer weather, they are really soft so we haven’t been keeping any.

Walleyes are starting to show up with regularity. I caught the biggest walleye is 17 years of guiding this week. It was a nice 26 inch fish; feel free to view the photo on www. Fishdelavanlake.com. It was caught by 10 year old, Andrew Gonzalez all by himself. There were quite a few high fives in the boat after that! Most of the fish I’ve been catching are on nightcrawlers, but I’ve caught an occasional fish on small suckers. The fish seem to be in the weeds in 12-14 ft of water.

Northern Pike have been almost non-existent for me. Other than catching bass and an occasional walleye on the suckers, it hasn’t made much sense to spend the money on the bait every trip. If I tell you where to fish for them, I’d just be guessing. I haven’t really found them yet!

Largemouth bass have two patterns right now. The weedline and the boat dock pattern. The weedline bite has been very sporadic, you need to move along and catch one fish here and there since they aren’t schooled up. I did, however, catch a 7 lb fish last week by Del Mar. Most of my fish are coming off of nightcrawlers fished on a split shot rig or leeches being drop shotted. For the boat dock pattern, try casting smoke or green pumpkin spider grubs on ¼ oz bullet head weights. This seems to be producing most of the action. The north shore docks seem to be the best from the Yacht Club to Willow Point.

Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 608-883-2050
