Delavan Lake 5/17/09
This spring has been exceptionally cold,
we sure need some stable warm weather to get the fish really moving.
Overall, the fishing has been pretty good, as it is most springs
most of the action is in less than 8 ft of water.
Northern Pike remain in the shallow bays. The best depth to catch
them is 6-8 ft. Most of the success is coming while trolling shallow
diving Walleye Bandits in Clown or Fire Tiger or Wally Divers in the
same pattern. The best location has been by Assembly Park or by the
Outlet. A lot of pike are also being taken by pan fishermen on slip
bobbered fathead minnows. However there haven’t been any real large
ones caught.
Largemouth bass fishing has been very good. The best depth is 3-4 ft
of water. Look for the fish by the outlet or Viewcrest Bay. Most of
my success has been coming off of Texas rigged All Terrain Stiks in
green pumpkin. It has been pretty hard to fish weightless sticks due
to the windy conditions. The bass remain in a pre-spawn pattern.
With some warmer weather, they should begin to spawn in the next
week.
Bluegills can be readily caught in 2 ft of water. Look for the fish
in Viewcrest Channel, Lake Lawn Lodge or in the Highlands. A small
bobber and an ice jig tipped with wax worms is a real good bet. With
some steady warm weather, the bluegills should be pushed into the
shallows even more in preparation for spawn.
Walleye Pike have been spotty. Most of the success has come slip
bobbering leeches in 8 ft of water. Look for the fish on main lake
points with a hard bottom. Areas like the Yacht Club and Willow
Point always hold an abundance of fish. Another approach with
limited success has been trolling shallow diving crankbaits in 10 ft
of water. Pearl or Clown Patterns seem to be the best bets.
Good luck and I hope to
see you on the water.
