Delavan Lake 5/24/09
The continued cold weather has made
fishing tough for just about everything. Most of the success is
either with bluegills or largemouth bass. Hopefully we’ll get some
warmer temps soon and the fishing will improve dramatically.
Largemouth bass have been biting in 3-4 ft of water. Most of the
fish are pre-spawn. They are cruising around the shallows trying to
make nests. The best bait has been Senkos or a black and blue jig.
Look for the fish by the outlet bridge or in the Highlands Channel.
Last week the winds and cold weather made it hit or miss on catching
fish. Some days the fish bit, but the next day if there were strong
winds and cold fronts, the fish just shut down.
Bluegills are pre-spawn in the shallows. They can be readily caught
in less than 2 ft of water. They are associating with sand bottom.
They will be spawning when the water temperature approaches 65
degrees. Since we’ve had such cool weather, it may be a while before
we get there. Some of the best action came by Lake Lawn Lodge. The
fish were caught on leaf worms fished underneath a bobber in less
than 1 ft of water.
Some Walleyes are being caught on the steep rocky breaks. The best
depth is 12-15 ft of water. They are being caught on leeches and
fathead minnows. The best locations are Browns Channel and Willow
Point. I prefer fishing the lindy rig or lead head jig.
Northern Pike are being caught sporadically by using one of two
methods. You can try trolling shallow diving crankbaits in 6-8 ft of
water, or lindy rigging medium suckers right on the break in 12-15
ft of water. The best fishing has been by Assembly Park or in front
of the gray condos. Use crankbaits such as the Wally Diver #5 in
clown pattern or the shallow Wally Bandit in Perch pattern. Most of
the success is coming in the early morning hours.
The Crappies I’ve been catching are in the shallow weed beds in 6-8
ft of water. They are being caught on either slip bobbered minnows
or casting small plastics. Chartreuse or Grape are the best colors
for the plastics. The best location is by Browns Channel or the buoy
line in the Highlands.
Good luck and I hope to
see you on the water.
