Delavan Lake 6/1/09
Happy Memorial Day! Fishing has
been improving with the warmer weather. The crappies and largemouth
bass have almost completed their spring ritual of spawning. The
bluegills are spawning currently.
Largemouth bass are cruising the shallows in 2-4 ft of water. They
are being caught on white spinner baits or Senko type stick baits.
The best color is green pumpkin or pumpkin with red flake. Look for
the fish by the Viewcrest channel, Highlands channel or by the
outlet. All the beds I have seen in shallow water are now empty and
the bass are cruising the shallows eating the small bluegill.
Crappies are biting in the weedline in 6-10 ft of water. The best
success has come on small plastics or slip bobbered fat head
minnows. The best location is by Willow Point or just west of the
Yacht Club. Some of the crappies caught last week were over 12
inches. The best way to catch the crappies on plastic is a very slow
retrieve with many pauses. They will hit very lightly, many times it
feels just like a weed.
Bluegills are starting to spawn in 2-3 ft of water. The best
location is just west of Willow Point, Lake Lawn Lodge or west of
Browns channel. The best approach is red worms or leaf worms fished
on a bare hook and a bobber. I prefer anchoring over using the
trolling motor. In such shallow water, the trolling motor seems to
spook the fish.
Walleye fishing has been slow, the fish that are being caught are on
the weedline in 12-15 ft of water. Some of my friends have been
getting only 2 or 3 fish in about 4 hours fishing for them. I did
try trolling one day last week in 16-18 ft of water without any
success. I didn’t mark many fish either. The trolling bite is
probably 2-3 weeks away yet.
Northern Pike fishing has been all right in the 8-10 ft depth range.
The best results have been coming while trolling shallow diving
crank baits. Clown pattern and perch pattern have been producing
most of the action. I did try drifting suckers last week in 16-20 ft
of water without any luck. Weedline fishing will again be occurring
in the next week or so.
Good luck and I hope to
see you on the water.
