Delavan Lake 6/15/09 -
6/21/09
Delavan Lake has been very
good for the past week. The boat traffic has been extreme. The
bluegills are now in the shallows spawning. It’s a great opportunity
to take a kid fishing.
Bluegills are in 2-6 ft of water. They can be readily caught on
bobbers with single hooks. The best bait is either red worms or leaf
worms. Look for the fish west of the Yacht Club or west of Willow
Point. You need to sort through a lot of the small ones but there
are a great deal of 9-10 inch fish available.
Walleyes are in the weed edge in 12-15 ft of water. The best bait is
either a leech or nightcrawler. Most of the success that I’m having
is a split shot rigged nightcrawler. The best success has been with
a chartreuse painted hook. The best location has been by Browns
Channel or just west of the Yacht Club.
Largemouth bass are still in flux. They are still not really heavy
in the weedline. I’ve been catching them in the 10-12 ft depth
range. They are not schooled up. You have to fish a lot of spots to
catch a lot of fish. Most of the fish I’ve been catching are on
split shot rigged nightcrawlers.
Northern Pike are starting to bite just off the weedline. They are
easily caught on lindy rigged suckers. The best depth has been 15-20
ft of water. I’ve been straight lining them beneath the boat. Some
success has come off of slip bobbers in the 12 ft depth range. I try
to make sure that we can catch a multitude of different fish so I
keep the boat in 20 ft of water.
Crappies are on the weedline in 12-13 ft of water. They are being
caught on chartreuse and purple plastics. 1/32 oz Arkie jig with a
purple twister tail is producing most of the action. The best
location is by Browns Channel or by the Yacht Club.
