Delavan Lake 6/22/09 -
6/28/09
The fishing on Delavan
continues to be very good. The boat traffic remains high so the
fishing pressure is also high but there are still plenty of good
bites out there, especially on or just outside the weedlines.
The largemouth bass are biting well on split shot rigged
nightcrawlers. I like to fish for them just outside the weed edge.
Fish the bass in 15-18 ft of water. The biggest problem has been the
green slimy weeds this year; we just can’t seem to get rid of them.
The bass have yet to really school up on the points. That bite will
occur in probably 2-3 weeks.
The best bite on the lake is the spawning bluegills. They are in 2-3
ft of water associating with hard sand bottom. Look for the fish by
Willow Point or west of the Yacht Club. They can be readily caught
on nightcrawlers or leaf worms fished beneath a slip bobber. Within
the next couple of weeks, they will slowly move out to the deep
weedline in 15-20 ft of water. My biggest bluegills of the year have
been caught in at least 18 ft of water.
Northern Pike are finally starting to move out to the weed edge.
Most of the fish are either being caught on slip bobbers or straight
lining suckers beneath the boat. The best depth still remains 15-20
ft of water. Look for the fish by the gray condos or just west of
the Yacht club. Fish medium suckers about 1 ½ - 2 ft away from the
sinker.
Crappies are the weedline. The best depth is 12- 15 ft of water. The
best presentation is purple or chartreuse plastics. Look for the
fish by Browns Channel or by Belvidere Park. With the water
temperature, the fish are starting to get soft and my son Nate
doesn’t even like to eat them when they are that soft. He prefers to
keep the bluegills but they must be iced down.
Walleye fishing has been relatively slow. You can catch a couple
here and there. They are being caught either on a nightcrawler or a
chrome/blue jig and Rapala. The best location is by Browns Channel
or by 3 flags. The best depth is 15-20 ft of water.
