Lake Geneva 5/17/09
With the cool nights and the
excessive winds last week, the lake remains very cold. Fishing is
therefore pretty spotty. The best success is either in Abbey Harbor
or in Geneva Bay.
Largemouth bass are being readily caught on Senkos or live
nightcrawlers fished on a split shot rig. The best location is in
the Abbey or in Geneva Bay. Work a depth of 3-4 ft of water in and
around the boats. One of the keys is to fish by the outboard motors
where their washout is, it creates a little hole for the fish to sit
in. Most of the fish I’ve been catching are relatively small, in the
2-3 lb range.
Smallmouth bass has been spotty. They are very scattered and the
best location has been by Cisco Beach or by Belvidere Park in
Fontana. The best presentation has been either a fathead minnow
fished on a split shot rig or a small white hair jig. The key to
finding the fish is finding the pods of bait fish. Once you find the
minnows, you’ll find the smallmouth bass. You want to keep moving to
find the active fish.
Bluegills have been relatively slow. They are also looking for the
warmest water, as are the largemouth bass. I’ve been finding them in
the Abbey or in Geneva Bay. The best approach is small ice jigs
fished underneath a bobber. The bait I prefer is red worms or wax
worms.
Perch are being caught by Knollwood on small fathead minnows. The
best presentation is fishing them on a slip bobber in 6-8 ft of
water. The schools aren’t as big as they are in fall but if you
search for them, you’ll be able to get a nice meal.
Rock bass are starting to show up in the shallows. They are in 4-5
ft of water. They can be caught on either night crawlers or small
fathead minnows. You can either use a bobber or use a split shot
rig.
Good luck and I hope to see you on the water.
