Lake Geneva 6/1/09
Happy Memorial Day!
With the exceptionally cool spring, fishing should really be picking
up by Memorial Day but this year, the water remains pretty cold.
Most of the action is coming from shallow water.
For the Largemouth bass the best bite on the lake is in Abbey Harbor
or in Geneva Bay. Try fishing them with a nightcrawler fished on a
split shot rig or a Senkos Texas rigged. The best depth is 3-5 ft of
water. The colors I prefer are green pumpkin or watermelon seed.
Smallmouth bass fishing has been pretty spotty. Most of the fish are
coming on small hair jigs in the crayfish pattern or on rootbeer
colored Chompers fished on a football head jig. Some of the best
locations have been by Abbey Springs or the Geneva Inn. The
smallmouth bass should be spawning in the next 2 weeks. The spawning
fish are usually in about 8-10 ft of water. Presently the fish are
scattered in 5-6 ft of water.
The bluegills are in the shallows. The best depths are in 3-6 ft of
water. They are biting on wax worms tipped on an ice fishing jig or
red worms. The best location is by Knollwood and in Geneva Bay. The
emerging weeds are the key to the bite. Some of the bluegills have
been over 10 inches.
The best bite on the whole lake, has been the Rock Bass. They are in
5-6 ft of water around the pier cribs. They are being caught on
nightcrawlers and fathead minnows. The best presentation is a split
shot single hook rig. Look for the piers that have hard sand bottom,
I like the piers by the Elgin Club.
Due to the water temperature, the crappie bite has been very
limited. They will be coming in to spawn once the water warms a
little bit. Most of the action has been sporadic. Look for the fish
in 12-14 ft of water by the Geneva Inn and by Stone Manor. Small
plastics or slip bobbering small shiners will be your best bet.
