Lake Geneva 6/1/09 - 6/8/09

With the warmer weather, Lake Geneva is finally warming up. The smallmouth are in a pre-spawn pattern. With water temperatures at 55-56 degrees, the fish are finally becoming active.

Largemouth bass can be readily caught in Geneva Bay or in Abbey harbor. Most of my success has come on nightcrawlers fished on a split shot rig. Another good approach is white hair jigs swam through the water column, half way down in 15 ft of water.

Rock bass are being caught in 10-12 ft depths. Nightcrawlers on a split shot rig have been the best approach. Once you get on a school of them, they will bite almost every cast. Look for the rock bass in Belvidere Park or Elgin Club.

Smallmouth bass are starting to spawn. 5/31/09 is the first day that they are starting to make nests. Without any wind, the smallmouth bass will not bite, the water is way too clear. Some sight fishermen are catching the smallmouth on white tubes. Most of my success has come off of a leech and split shot rig. Look for the fish by Elgin Club or by the Military Academy.

With warmer water, the bluegills are in the shallows in 3-4 ft of water. The best approach is a leaf worm and a bobber. The best location is Geneva Bay or in Trinkes. Because of the late warm up in the lake, the bluegills are about 3 weeks away from spawning.

Northern Pike fishing has been slow. Most of the pike that are being caught are in the 8-10 ft depth range. They are being caught on white spinner baits or suspending jerk baits. Look for the fish in Williams Bay or in Fontana beach.

Walleye fishing has been slow overall. Most of the night anglers are catching smallmouth bass and northern pike instead of walleyes. The water needs to warm a bit yet, before the walleyes will become active.

Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 608-883-2050
