Lake Geneva 6/8/09 -
6/14/09
Finally summer seems to be
right around the corner, notwithstanding the current cold temps of
this past weekend. Hopefully we’ll get some consistency soon. The
fish seem about 2 weeks behind normal patterns. There is no problem
catching fish, no matter when you fish, but you may need to be less
choosy with the species you’re after.
Rock Bass are everywhere in the 6-8 ft depth range. They are readily
caught on small jigs and nightcrawlers fished on the split shot rig.
The best location is by Belvidere Park or by the Elgin Club. Most of
the fish are schooling and preparing to spawn and are very hungry.
Smallmouth bass are on the beds this week and spawning. The best
location is by the Military
Academy or by Elgin Club. They are being caught on white tube jigs
or split shot rigged leeches. The best depth is anywhere between 10
and 12 ft of water. When the fish are spawning it is highly
unethical to keep the fish, I prefer never sight fishing and slowly
drifting over the fish and then releasing all of them.
Largemouth bass are in the shallow weed flats. The best depth is
6-10 ft. The best location is by Trinkes or Fontana Bay. Most of the
fish I’ve been catching are on split shot rigged nightcrawlers. You
need to move around quite a bit since they are not as concentrated
as the post spawn fish.
The northern pike are still in the shallows in the 8-10 ft depth
range. They are being caught on spinner baits or jerk baits that go
down 4-5 ft. Look for the fish in Geneva bay or in Fontana Bay. Some
fish are also being caught on slip bobber and large golden shiners.
Bluegills are in the shallows, in the 3-4 ft depth range. They are
being caught on slip bobbers with leaf worms or wax worms. Look for
the fish in Geneva Bay or by Williams Bay. All of the bluegills are
pre-spawn yet, but they will likely spawn in the next week or so.
