Lake Geneva 6/28/09 -
7/05/09
Summer has finally arrived
and with the warm weather, the fishing remains very consistent. We
are catching a lot of smallmouth and largemouth bass in the same
locations. With the warm weather, the boat traffic has been pretty
severe.
Largemouth bass are being caught in 11-14 ft of water on the weed
flats. The best presentation is either top water in early morning or
nightcrawlers fished on a split shot rig. For the top water, I
prefer the chrome/blue or chrome/black Chug bugs. The last few times
out, they like the real slow methodically pace. Every fish caught on
the top water, was over 14 inches my last few trips, with the
largest weighing in at 4 lbs.
Smallmouth bass are still scattered in and around their spawning
areas. The best location for them is by the Elgin Club, the Military
Academy or by Coleman’s Point. The depth I’ve been catching them in
is the 11-14 ft range. I catch them while targeting the largemouth
bass. Other than nightcrawlers, small hair jigs have been producing
quite a few nice fish. Crayfish pattern is the preferred color.
Rock bass are pretty much everywhere you put a worm in the water.
Again, it’s a pretty good time to take the younger crowd out for a
day of fishing. The presentation I use is drifting a nightcrawler.
The best depth is 8-12 ft of water.
Lake Trout are starting to be caught in the main lake basin. The
best time is early dawn hours. They are suspending in the water
column 50-70 ft down in over 110 ft of water. Spoons and a chrome
dodger and fly are producing most of the fish.
Perch can be caught in the sandy areas, like Belvidere Park or
Rainbow Point. The problem I’ve been having is that most of the fish
are 6-7 inches long so I haven’t been targeting them. The best bait
is a slip bobber and a leaf worm. The best depth is 8-10 ft of
water.
Northern Pike have been slow. The thermocline has not formed. With
the warmer weather, we should have a thermocline within the next
week to 10 days.
