Delavan Lake 7/4/10 -
7/11/10
Fishing has been simply fantastic. Both
numbers and size of fish have been outstanding. The only drawback
has been how busy the lake has been. I launched at 5:40 a.m. on
Saturday and already had to park on the grass as the lot was full.
Northern Pike fishing has been great. The fish are in 22 – 25 ft of
water. I’ve been lindy rigging medium sized suckers. This time of
year, the size matters. If I use suckers that are too big, the
smaller pike have been hitting it and taking out about 15 ft of line
and then dropping it. It wouldn’t be such a big deal, but the
suckers are pretty expensive at $2 each. 6 inch suckers have been
the best size for me. It will catch both the larger and smaller
pike. The best location has been by Willow Point to the west or by
Browns Channel.
Largemouth bass can be found throughout the weedline. They aren’t
totally schooling up yet, but they are starting to. If you find a
location with active fish you should be able to catch a couple off
of every spot. My largest fish last week, was a nice 22 inch fish.
The best location has been by Browns Channel or by the old Delavan
Lake Marina on the north shore. The best presentation has been
either nightcrawlers or fishing All Terrain swim jigs. Look for the
fish by the weeds in 16-18 ft of water.
Bluegills have moved deeper, they are in 18-20 ft of water. I’ve
been catching most of my fish on Thill slip bobbers or fishing a
split shot and a single hook. The best location has been by Willow
Point of by the point at Assembly Park. If you find a school of
small fish, you might as well move. The blugills are now schooling
by size. On Sunday, we got into a school of 8-9 inch fish and never
had to throw one back.
Walleyes have been biting either trolling crankbaits or fishing live
bait such as nightcrawlers and leeches. The best depth has been
16-18 ft of water. I’ve been trolling on the outside of the weedline
with medium diving crankbaits. Fire Tiger or Pearly have been
producing most of the fish. For live bait, I’ve been fishing the
leeches or the nightcrawlers on lindy rigs with a chartreuse painted
hook with a 24 inch leader length, the sinker size is 1/8 oz.
Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties,
