Delavan Lake 7/11/10 -
7/18/10
Fishing on Delavan Lake is simply
phenomenal. The largemouth bass are hitting really well and there
are several other species that are pretty hungry too. I believe
though that my secret lake has been found, the boat traffic has been
extreme. Last Saturday I launched at 5:15 a.m. and was about the
40th boat there. Weekdays are just about as heavy so come with some
patience.
Northern Pike are still hitting on lindy rigged suckers. The fish
are in 22 – 25 ft of water. I’ve been lindy rigging medium sized
suckers. Six inch suckers continue to be the best size for me. The
best location has been by Willow Point to the west or by Browns
Channel. On an average, the bigger fish haven’t been hitting, the
fish I’ve been catching are 24-27 inches. When using bigger suckers,
the small fish have been taking out 15-20 ft of line, killing the
bait but aren’t being caught.
Largemouth bass are starting to school up heavy on the weedline.
They can either be caught fishing a jig, black and blue colors work
best, or on a nightcrawler fished on a split shot rig. Last week, I
probably caught 10-12 over 18 inches. The best location has been by
Brown’s Channel, the Yacht Club or Assembly Park point. The key to
the bass is finding locations with hard bottom in the deep water.
Now if you catch one, most likely you will catch 2-3 from the same
location.
Walleye fishing has been just okay. The numbers and size of last
week have declined. Most of my walleyes are being caught on split
shot rigged nightcrawlers or leeches. Some of my friends have been
trolling 300 series Bandit crankbaits with some success. It has been
hard to catch more than 3 or 4 per trip. The best location has been
by the concrete point, willow Point or by Browns Channel.
Bluegills are positioned off the weedline in 18-20 ft of water. The
best location has been by Browns Channel or by the Oriental
boathouse. Split shot rigged leaf worms or wax worms fished on a
Lindy Genz worm has been a good option also. The fish have been
schooling in the same size range as last week. So if you are into a
school of small fish, you need to move.
Crappie fishing has been all right. Most folks don’t care to keep
crappies this time of year because their flesh is so soft. They are
positioned off the weedline and are suspended 5-10 ft down in 20-25
ft of water. They can be caught on small plastics. The best color is
purple or chartreuse fished on a 1/32 oz Arkie Jig. The best
location is by the Clock tower by Willow Point or off the concrete
point.
Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties,
