Lake Geneva 7/4/10 - 7/11/10

It’s hard to believe that the 4th of July is already here! It’s been hot and humid so the area lakes are very busy. I hope you enjoyed your 4th of July celebrations. Fishing remains very good. Due to all of the warm weather, the thermocline has formed. Northern Pike fishing should improve over the next few weeks.

Largemouth bass can be caught on two patterns. In early morning and evening, the top water bite has been exceptional. Use chrome/blue or chrome/black Chug Bugs or Pop-R’s. The best location has been by Trinkes or in Williams Bay. Once the sun gets high in the sky, a lot of action has been coming off the deep weedlines in 18-22 ft of water. I will fish 4 inch worms either drop shotted or Carolina rigged. The best color is green pumpkin or watermelon seed.

Northern Pike are starting to move into the deep water. Currently they are right outside of the weedline in 27-30 ft of water. They can be caught on lindy rigged medium suckers. A quality fish locator is essential for this process. I will seldom fish for the pike unless I see them on my screen first. They aren’t schooled up like they will be in a couple weeks so you need to keep moving to find the active fish. The best location has been by Fontana Beach or in the narrows on the north side.

Smallmouth bass have moved deep. They are in 18-22 ft of water. Look for the fish by Elgin Club or by the Military Academy. The best presentation is drop shotting pearl and black Shad lures in a 2 inch size. This is the toughest time of the year to catch Smallmouth bass. Later in the year when they move deeper, they will school up on hard rock bottom. Don’t be too concerned about not being able to catch them right now, no one else is doing any better.

Bluegills have moved out of the shallow waters and are in 18 ft of water. My best location has been by Elgin Club. I’ve been straight lining right under the boat with leaf worms. They have been concentrating in sizes, so if you find a school of larger fish, you need to stay on them because the size will be consistent, the next school you find may be significantly smaller.

Yellow Perch have also moved slightly deeper. They are in 12-16 ft of water. The best location has been by Linn Pier or by Knollwood. I’ve been catching them on nightcrawler pieces fished on a split shot rig. Drift fishing has been producing most of my fish.

Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 608-883-2050
